Activities in China and Europe

Activities in China

The vastness of the archaeological area, the richness of the material and the rapid development of modern society set the context and the challenges for researching, restoring and presenting and interpreting the meaning and significance of the Han Yangling Museum Site to the public. Chinese and European experts therefore discussed questions and problems organised in 3 themes:

   (1) exchange of expertise in archaeology.

   (2) exchange of expertise in conservation.

   (3) exchange of expertise in interpretation.

   (4) Experts from the museum explained the major steps in the development of the Han Yangling Museum site into a top-100 museum in China and the steps involved in the creation of the site into a major tourist attraction in the country.

Activities in Europe

In order to better understand the European approach to archaeology and heritage presentation, a scientific workshop was set up that brought a group of Chinese experts to sites in Pisa and Florence. Themes ranging from excavating, conservation, restoration and presentation were discussed. Special attention was paid to the problem of how to balance the significance and value of heritage with the needs and developments of modern society.

On 15th and 16th, July, Chinese delegation visited the archaeological site and the protection centre of Pisa Ancient Ships and the Chemical Laboratory of Pisa University, accompanied by Professor Esmeralda Remotti, the leader of Pisa Ancient Ships Archaeological Team and Maria Perla Colombini, professor of Pisa University and Protection Expert. The Chinese visitors, together with Italian technicians, also participated in the laboratory practices for a short time.
